In 1962, at the orthodontic section of the ADA, Dr. C. F. Gugino already gave a lecture on
myofunctional education, and developed afterwards the
“awareness training” and the “unlocking concept”.
In 2000, in a publication in the American Journal of Orthodontics, together with Prof. Ivan
DUS, Dr. C. F. Gugino stated :
“Every patient who has a malocclusion has some degree of dysfunction. The earlier you treat and unlock the TMJ the more the face will adapt to your concept. The later you treat, your concept will have to fit the face”.

Even though multiple universities were involved already in the functional and early treatment
approach in orthodontics, it was often carried out using hard resin devices during the entire
treatment.
On the initiative of Dr. Gugino, this new approach based on functional and behavioral
rehabilitation led to the development of a 2 phase orthodontic treatment approach: orthopedic and
orthodontic.
In a quarter of a century, the functional early treatment of patients and preventing/correcting
dysfunctions as early as possible has become more then a reality, and is now widely applied in
Europe and around the world, clearly evolving towards a global medical approach with patients.
